About the Role Senior Medical Adviser (Service Delivery) provides clinical leadership and management oversight of clinical advisers delivering health and health systems advice to DVA. Overseeing the Community Based Care Team composed of multiple clinical specialities, the Senior Medical Adviser will lead the delivery of consistent, timely, high quality clinical advice to DVA business areas to support access to necessary veteran health care. Bupa is seeking an experienced medical practitioner full-time or 4 days a week with blended remote and DVA office attendance in either Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or Brisbane. Senior Medical Adviser (SMA-H) will report to the Senior medical Officer Health. Under the direction of the Commonwealth, the Senior Medical Adviser will provide leadership and management of a team providing expert clinical advice to support policy, programs, and service delivery; contribute to research interpretation and application; apply clinical guidelines, protocols, and standards; liaise with internal and external stakeholders; support monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement activities; provide input into system optimisation to enhance service quality and efficiency; and undertake other duties as directed by the Commonwealth. Responsibilities Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of Clinical Adviser – Health (CA-Hs) to deliver high quality health advice for key projects and activities, fostering a positive team culture, monitoring workloads, conducting performance reviews, and establishing effective team processes. Provide expert clinical advice and act as the primary escalation point for projects and activities, including responding to queries from business areas and resolving conflicting or unclear medical evidence, including conflicting CA-H advice. Undertake and oversee desktop research, analysis, and environmental scanning to inform evidence‑based health system advice to the Department, including insights on industry trends, standards of care, and current clinical practice. Support end‑to‑end project delivery through planning, coordination, milestone tracking, and proactive identification and management of risks and opportunities. Develop and contribute to key documentation, including planning materials, approval briefs, consultation responses, submissions, internal correspondence, and meeting papers. Engage and collaborate with internal stakeholders across the CHO division, health business areas, and broader DVA to build alignment, improve understanding, and enhance the quality and timeliness of clinical advice. Provide strategic advice to DVA management on the impact of policy and procedural changes, and liaise with external providers on complex or systemic issues in line with agreed procedural frameworks. Qualifications Current unrestricted registration as a Specialist Medical Practitioner with AHPRA (including General Practice) with at least 5 years of contemporary clinical experience across DVA‑relevant health areas such as primary care, musculoskeletal medicine, mental health, geriatrics, rehabilitation, or surgery, including recent independent clinical practice. Experience with community‑based delivery of health care services preferred. Experience in clinical leadership and management, including quality improvement. Demonstrated ability to make time‑critical decisions in complex, ambiguous, or information‑poor environments, supported by strong clinical judgement. Highly developed critical analysis skills, with the ability to apply evidence‑based research principles to a range of clinical scenarios, including those involving novel and emerging therapies. Demonstrated experience in leading, managing and developing a multidisciplinary team of clinicians. Sound knowledge of the Australian healthcare system, including key schemes and frameworks such as the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with both clinical and non‑clinical stakeholders. Demonstrated sensitivity, professionalism, and sound judgement in managing complex client, staff, and medico‑legal matters. Desirable Qualifications Understanding of DVA processes and the services available to veterans and their families. Experience using the Microsoft suite of computer software, team collaboration software and videoconferencing. Demonstrated experience in medical or policy writing.
