GIS Developer (Smallworld / Utilities) Contract | Melbourne About the Client Join a leading global consultancy delivering specialist technology solutions to a major utilities provider operating across electricity transmission and gas distribution networks. This environment supports critical infrastructure systems with a strong focus on data accuracy, operational performance, and large-scale transformation programs. About the Role An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced GIS Developer to contribute to enterprise-level geospatial systems and applications. You will design, build, and maintain GIS solutions that underpin network operations, asset management, and infrastructure planning. Working closely with engineering, data, and business teams, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality geospatial platforms across complex environments. Key Responsibilities Geospatial Development & Integration Design, develop and customise GE Vernova Smallworld applications (Electric Office, Gas Distribution Office, Design Manager) Develop solutions using Magik scripting, workflow automation, and data model extensions Build and manage integrations between Smallworld and enterprise systems (SAP, ADMS) Perform data modelling, migration, and data quality management Support and lead platform upgrades and migrations (Smallworld 4.x / 5.x) Enterprise Delivery (SDLC) Deliver solutions across the full SDLC lifecycle (design, build, test, deploy) Support release cycles, SIT/UAT, and production deployments Produce and maintain technical documentation and design artefacts Operate within Agile or Waterfall delivery frameworks Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate with network operations, asset management, and field teams Work with architects, data engineers, and integration teams to align solutions with enterprise strategy Engage with external vendors (e.g. GE Vernova, SAP, ESRI) on technical delivery and roadmap alignment Provide mentoring and support to junior developers Operational Support & Improvement Provide Level 2/3 support for geospatial systems Troubleshoot and resolve complex application and data issues Drive improvements across performance, data quality, and operational processes Key Requirements 5+ years GIS development experience in enterprise environments Strong hands‑on expertise with: GE Vernova Smallworld (Electric Office & Gas Distribution Office) Magik scripting and Smallworld customisation Experience with platform upgrades and migrations (4.x / 5.x) Strong understanding of utility network models (electric and/or gas) Experience integrating with SAP, ADMS, and enterprise systems Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to operate independently Excellent communication and documentation skills Nice to Have Experience with Kubernetes and containerisation Knowledge of databases (VMDS, Oracle Spatial, PostGIS) Experience with REST/SOAP APIs and integration patterns Scripting experience in Python or similar Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version control (GitLab) Experience using ITSM tools (e.g. ServiceNow) What’s on Offer Opportunity to work on enterprise‑scale geospatial systems within critical infrastructure Exposure to complex utility network environments and large data ecosystems Collaborative environment with strong focus on innovation and continuous improvement Long‑term contract within a major utilities transformation program How to Apply If you’re a GIS Developer with strong Smallworld experience looking for your next contract opportunity, apply now.
