Head of Controls & Automation | Data centres Head of Controls & Automation | Data CentresSydney | Client-Side Hyperscale Data Centre Operator APAC FM have been engaged to hire a ‘Head of Controls & Automation’ for a globally recognised, client-side owner operator within the hyperscale data centre sector. This is a rare opportunity to join one of APAC’s most advanced data centre platforms and lead the controls, automation and digital infrastructure strategy across a large-scale hyperscale and colocation portfolio. The successful candidate will act as the senior authority across BMS, EPMS, DCIM, SCADA and critical environment automation systems, shaping technical standards, influencing global design decisions and partnering directly with major hyperscale customers. With executive visibility, long-term investment and the ability to build capability from the ground up, this role is designed for a true industry leader within mission critical environments. The Opportunity Reporting to senior leadership within the Data Centre Technical division, this role will take ownership of the controls and automation ecosystem across multiple mission critical assets and developments. You will be responsible for driving technical governance, operational resilience, platform standardisation and future‑focused automation initiatives across complex critical environments. Key Responsibilities Lead the global controls & automation strategy across BMS, EPMS, DCIM, CMS and SCADA platforms Define technical standards, control philosophies and deployment frameworks across critical infrastructure assets Oversee controls integration for cooling systems, power systems, telemetry and operational analytics Drive innovation across digital building technologies, automation platforms and infrastructure‑as‑code initiatives Lead vendor governance, performance management and controls standardisation programs Act as the senior SME for customer‑facing technical engagements, RFPs and solution workshops Partner with mechanical, electrical and operational stakeholders to improve resilience, efficiency and uptime Support critical operations teams with escalations involving integrated systems and controls performance Influence future‑ready initiatives including liquid cooling, energy optimisation, load management and smart automation strategies About You 10+ years’ experience within BMS, Controls, Automation or Critical Environments Strong exposure to hyperscale data centres, mission critical facilities or high‑availability infrastructure Deep technical expertise across BMS, EPMS, DCIM, SCADA and integrated controls systems Experience leading large‑scale automation or digital infrastructure programs Strong understanding of HVAC controls, electrical systems and critical environment operations Proven capability engaging with senior stakeholders, clients and technical delivery teams Engineering degree qualifications within Electrical Engineering or related disciplines highly regarded Salary package circa $200,000 – $250,000 + Super + STI & LTI options.
