THE ROLE The Principal Legal Counsel (Internal Review) at the Social Services Regulator (SSR) will provide authoritative, high‑level legal advice in relation to internal review applications under the Worker Screening Act 2020 (Vic) (WS Act) including those yet to be proclaimed as well as internal reviews relating to other decisions under the Social Services Regulations Act 2021 (SSR Act) and the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005 (Vic) (CWSA Act). The role will operate in a detail focused and high volume setting. A critical component to the Principal Legal Counsel's role will be to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team including engaging with experts from time to time. It will be essential for this role to balance analytical and critical thinking with an ability to process information quickly, adapt to changing circumstances, and confidently navigate ambiguity. The work of the Principal Legal Counsel will be diverse and interesting and will meaningfully contribute to performance of the SSR's functions that relate to safeguarding children and social service users. ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE Day‑to‑day your responsibilities will include: Conduct the internal review of applications received by the SSR from time to time through the preparation and delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based briefs, draft statements of reasons and recommendations, critically analysing complex information from a variety of sources to present clear, well‑reasoned advice to decision‑makers. Provide timely and authoritative legal advice on complex, high‑risk and sensitive internal review applications, ensuring alignment with legislative obligations and internal policy guidance. Effectively collaborate within the multi‑disciplinary internal review team to ensure subject matter expertise or advice is sought in relation to internal review applications where appropriate. Play a role in supporting the ongoing improvement of the internal review function, including the development, implementation, maintenance, monitoring of internal review applications as well as leading continuous improvement initiatives and effectively supporting performance and quality reporting.
