Urban College is a growing independent school in Melbourne's outer east, founded in 2022 and built around a simple belief: every young person deserves a place where they belong. We serve students aged 14–21 across multiple campuses — young people who may not have thrived in traditional school settings, many of whom are navigating significant complexity in their lives. About this role This is a senior educational leadership position and a core member of the Urban College Executive Team. The Assistant Principal is the Executive Principal's primary partner in ensuring all campuses operate at the highest standard — educationally, culturally, and operationally. You'll work in close partnership with each Head of Campus, meeting fortnightly to support their leadership and drive consistency across sites. You'll also carry personal accountability for Urban College's regulatory obligations — VRQA, VCAA, the Department of Education, and the ACNC — approaching these not as administrative burdens, but as the foundation on which our college's reputation rests. The Executive Principal holds the strategic layer: governance, finance, campus development, and long-range planning. You hold the educational and operational layer — making campuses excellent, cohesive, and compliant, every day, across every site. Key Responsibilities Lead regular campus leadership meetings with Heads of Campus, providing mentoring, accountability, and strategic operational guidance Champion teaching quality and student outcomes across all campuses, with a particular focus on our neurodiverse and highly anxious cohort Own Urban College's compliance calendar — VRQA, VCAA, Department of Education, and ACNC obligations managed proactively and thoroughly Serve as the Executive Principal's operational deputy, including in their absence on all operational matters Drive consistency in campus culture, practice, and standards across sites Support student wellbeing frameworks and critical incident response in partnership with campus teams Contribute to the onboarding and induction of new staff and leaders What we're looking for: Demonstrated experience in educational leadership, with a track record of leading and developing senior management teams A genuine commitment to senior secondary education and the belief that every young person can succeed with the right environment around them Working knowledge of VRQA, VCAA, and Department of Education regulatory frameworks Strong interpersonal skills — you build trust quickly and hold people to high standards with warmth The drive to shape something from the ground up — you're motivated by possibility, comfortable with ambiguity, and energised by the challenge of building rather than maintaining Ability to operate with autonomy and make sound decisions in a fast-paced, growing organisation Relevant postgraduate qualifications in educational leadership (desirable) Why Urban College? This role is genuinely rare. You'll have real executive influence in a school that is building its identity, culture, and systems from the ground up. You'll work alongside a Principal who is deeply invested in getting this right — and you'll see the impact of your leadership in the lives of young people every single day.
